Oaxaca de Juarez, Mexico

The Historic Centre of Oaxaca, located in the state of Oaxaca, is one of the most remarkable examples of Spanish colonial urban planning in Latin America. Together with the Monte Albán archaeological site, it was inscribed on the World Heritage List of the UNESCO in 1987. The city is distinguished by the harmony of its urban layout, the monumentality of its civil and religious architecture, and the adaptation of its buildings to the region’s frequent seismic activity. Many of the structures preserved today date from the early eighteenth century, following successive reconstructions after the earthquakes that repeatedly affected the city throughout its history.

BUILDING OF THE OAXACA STATE GENERAL ARCHIVE

The Oaxaca State General Archive (AGEO) was inaugurated in late 2016. Designed by architect Ignacio Mendaro Corsini, the complex was built to rescue and protect Oaxaca's documentary heritage.

Location:

  • It is located in Las Canteras Park, in the municipality of Santa Lucía del Camino, an area of high symbolic value from which the stone for the viceregal city of Oaxaca was extracted.

Materiality

  • Pigmented Concrete: Mendaro used ocre-toned pigmented concrete.

  • Cultural Connection: This mimics the color of Mixtec earth and traditional adobe buildings.

Spatial Concept

  • Four Levels: The structure features four distinct stories.

  • Functional Separation: The ground floor hosts public zones.

  • Secure Areas: The upper levels separate specialized archive and storage areas.

Artistic Details

  • Integrated Design: The perimeter and interior gates are fully integrated into the design.

  • Textile Inspiration: The gate patterns are inspired by traditional Oaxacan textiles.

  • Renowned Author: Designed by the internationally acclaimed artist Francisco Toledo.

The Building of the General Archive of the State of Oaxaca (AGEO) has been widely celebrated globally and has received multiple national and international awards for its exceptional landscape integration, sustainability, and architectural design.
