John Peterson, ICAHM president
The International Committee for Archaeological Heritage Management (ICAHM) is an International Scientific Committee (ISC) of ICOMOS, in support of World Heritage sites. Expert members do desk audits and missions to nomination sites on behalf of ICOMOS, and also engage in reactive missions and upstream consulting to assist World Heritage sites in danger or needing support to move forward. Members of the Bureau influence the direction of ICAHM and the proliferation of collaborations and initiatives critical to global heritage preservation. The current Bureau, who is up for renewal this year as most members have served their limits of three terms of three years, but have been productive in sponsoring meetings in Montelbano Elicano (2019), Dublin, Ireland (2022), Sydney, Australia (2023), and San Pedro de Atacama, Chile (2025), and upcoming in Oaxaca, Mexico (November 9-13, 2026). Discussions are underway to host future meetings in Palawan, Philippines; Porto, Portugal; and Osaka, Japan (2027-2029). Joining and participating in ICAHM activities connects members with a global network supporting best practices and dialogue for archaeological heritage preservation, and common interests among other organizations in the conservation community worldwide. Come to Oaxaca, experience this engagement first-hand, and emerge with a renewed commitment to partnerships and appreciation of World Heritage.
